GAUGE 1 |
We have now entered the dawn of a new era in Gauge 1 modelling.
Gauge 1 has for many years been the domain of the 'Model Engineer', who
purchased track only for the running of their loco, but in recent years
there has been an increase in the 'Railway Modeller' hobbyist who is interested
in running their beautiful loco on equally beautiful track, or for use
on exhibition, club and private layouts where appearance is all important.
Code 180 fine rail has started the revolution as it has all the benefits,
but not the cost. Stainless steel for great appearance. Better traction.
Less expansion/contraction. Less wear. Run fine & standard scale wheels.
Conductive for 2 rail live pickup. So now the first thing to consider
is the rail, let's make a start.... |

RAIL
|
I
now have 2 rail sections available to the Gauge 1 modeller:- |
The
new Fine Scale Bullhead CODE 180
Standard (Coarse) Scale Flat Bottom CODE 200 |
FINE CODE 180 BULLHEAD RAIL |
This
is the new rail section which for all intense and purposes has taken over from
the old code 200 section. With an overall size of 4.56mm x 2.24mm, a head height
of 1.15mm and foot height of 0.66mm, and root thickness of .98mm. It fits
the 'Standard' Scale 4 bolt injection moulded sleeper units and the new purpose
made 4 bolt 'Fine' scale injection moulded sleeper unit. Suitable for both
Standard Scale and Finescale wheel sets. A maximum flange depth of 2.4mm
(without wheel coning) can be used on either the 'Standard' double sleeper unit
or the newer single 'Fine' sleeper unit. This is a new section drawn exclusively
for me in either Brass, Stainless Steel or Nickel Silver. It is far easier
than the old rail to identify which way round the rail has to be fed through the
chairs and has a greatly improved appearance. For those modellers on a budget,
this is also the cheapest option. Going on from the traditional choice of brass
rail, I introduced the Stainless Steel rail which is now the most popular rail
to be bought. It has some great advantages over brass, being harder wearing than
brass, which is very useful where rail wear could be a problem such as portable
exhibition tracks. It has approximately 30% less expansion and contraction
than brass, so a smaller gap can be used at the fishplates and there is less risk
of buckling in the summer heat. It is conductive for those who use 2 rail
or stud contact, and it keeps cleaner. Better grip being steel on steel.
But the main reason people like the Stainless Steel is the appearance with a slight
surface rusting effect after some time outside. Paint will adhere better
to steel than brass. Can be silver soldered and soft soldered, using a special
flux. A surface rusting fluid is now available as well. This is the most
popular rail I now sell, for those modellers who are looking for the best looking
track at reasonable price, there is no choice; once you see it, it has to be "Stainless
Steel" rail. Available in 1 yard (36") (915mm), and 2 yard (72")
(1830mm). Please note that the 2 yard lengths will be more expensive for shipping. |
Since
the introduction of the Stainless Steel rail, I have now also introduced
the code 180 rail in Nickel Silver, and this is available for those modeller's
who are used to working in this material in the smaller gauges. It has a similar
appearance to Stainless Steel, so could be also be useful in turnout construction
for ease of manufacture and soldering. It is conductive for those who use 2 rail
or stud contact. Can be silver soldered and soft soldered.
(Please note that the 2 yard lengths will be more expensive
for shipping)

|
STANDARD CODE 200 BULLHEAD
RAIL |
All
stock of the old code 200 brass and nickel
silver has now gone, but there is no problem because
all track has now been adapted to fit the code 180 rail.
|
STANDARD SCALE CODE 200
FLAT BOTTOM RAIL |
I
now have stocks of the Flat Bottom rail drawn to the old 'Gauge 1 Model Railway
Association' standards for 'Flat Bottom Rail', although this is not a true flat
bottom section. It has an overall size of 5.00mm x 2.5mm top/2.85mm bottom, root
thickness is 1.15mm. This older section rail does not seem to have much
of a flat bottom, but is available for those who wish to match the nickel silver
rail used on 'Peco' track, this is then offered as a low cost alternative. It
would be useful to those wishing to use the solder to copper clad board method.
It is easy to identify which way up the rail goes. I do not have any sleeper
units to fit this rail although it will just fit the 'Standard' sleeper units
at a push. A maximum flange depth of 2.5mm (without wheel coning) can be
used. Available in brass, 1 yard (36") (915mm), 2 yard (72") (1830mm).
Please note that 2 yard lengths will be more
expensive for shipping. |
|

The picture here shows the different
rail heights, or should I say, 'What difference', as you can see from this, there
is virtually no difference. So those who have the older code 200 rail can
easily join to the new code 180 rail, and take full advantage of all the new items
available. In the centre, the brass code 200 bullhead rail. This is
joined on the left via my lost wax brass fishplate, to the new code 180 stainless
steel rail which has been rust treated. On the right is the new code 180
stainless steel rail joined via my new 20mm black A.S.A. moulded plastic fishplate.
|
MACHINED
BLADES |
For those who
are building their own turnouts, I now have available pairs of pre-machined blades
in various rail materials. They are 10" (255mm) long and are suitable for
any turnout up to 16' 6" (5000mm) long, they will need to be cut to length.
These come with fitting instructions a pair of 15mm or 20mm Fishplates depending
on which rail used.

PLASTIC
TRACK PARTS |
So
now to the choice of sleeper/chair base. For most people plastic is the choice
- simply because of maintenance & you save about 15% by assembling it yourself.
Please note - that the terms
'Fine' or 'Standard' scale track, refers to the appearance and NOT to the track
gauge which remains the same throughout the range, and is 45mm normal or 45.5mm
for gauge widened.
First the newer FINE track:- |
FINE SCALE SLEEPER UNIT |
|
Designed to fit the new code
180 fine scale stainless steel or brass rail, the new fine scale sleeper unit
is moulded in dark chocolate brown polypropylene single (track gauge of 45mm)
and gauge widened version (45.5mm) in A.B.S. dark chocolate brown, both with extra
U.V. light protection for tropical conditions. The rail inclination is included
for smooth running. The sleeper unit also comes with 2 different wood grains.
The wood block detail is included with the chair. Alternative sleeper ends
are also provided; so that the sleeper could be cut down to make an 8' 6"
sleeper in 1 to 32 scale (80.94mm). If you model in 10mm the sleeper length
of 85.56mm is just over for an 8' 6" sleeper, or is correct for a 9' 0"
sleeper in 1 to 32 scale, the sleeper width is 7.9mm, and a spacer bar length
of 17.4mm. The sleeper has a scale thickness of 4mm. The track
comes with 1.1mm discreet fixing holes on the inside of the spacer bar; these
will fit an escutcheon pin (19 gauge), which are also available from me. CAD
designed chair from the Great Eastern Railway, which even has the lettering and
numbers 'G.E.R. 1905 T B S 95 lbs.' With the rail now held correctly in the chair,
there is an increase in flange depth clearance to 2.4mm, that is without taking
into account the wheel 'Cone Radius', so even G Scale will run on it. Packs of
36 single sleeper units for 1 yard, 360 for 10 yards of track.
 You
can now copy full size practice by gauge widening the track. 45.5mm track
gauge. Use this track for radiuses especially under 12 ft. and on any curved
work as this helps to stop loco's slowing down due to flange friction as they
run through the curves. Moulded in dark chocolate brown UV stabilized A.B.S.
plastic to give a long life expectancy outside. Can also be used as straight
track. Can be solvent welded with A.B.S. chairs to make multi gauge track.
Packs of 36 single sleeper units for 1 yard, 360 for 10 yards of track.
|
|
FINE SCALE TURNOUT SLEEPER |
142.85mm
long for point work construction, 9.6mm wide, in long life chocolate brown UV stabilized
A.B.S. plastic. Can be solvent welded. Can also be used for non-standard
track gauges, such as 'Scaleten'. Also useful for track repairs. This has
pre-segmented cut positions in 4.75mm jumps. The spacer bars have a unique
hidden inter locking end that makes an extremely robust & stable turnout.
Discreet fixing points. 27 required for a 3000mm Fine turnout. Packs of
10 or 100. |
|
Secondly the older
STANDARD track:- |
STANDARD
SCALE SLEEPER UNITS |
Double
sleeper unit injection moulded in U.V. light stabilized dark chocolate drown polypropylene
plastic. Fine detailed chairs & sleeper sizes of 90mm x 9.5mm x 5mm.
CAD designed chairs were undertaken by 'Len Newman' of 'Exactoscale'. 1 in
20 rail inclination included for smooth running and better traction as more of
the wheel surface is in contact with the rail. Available in BR 3 bolt for
the older code 200 rail or Midland 4 bolt chair detail to fit the newer code 180
rail. Compatible with other makes of track. Extra U.V. additive included
as standard to give many years of protection.
|

|
For the first time in Gauge 1 modelling you
can now copy full size practice by gauge widening the track. 45.5mm track
gauge. Use this track for radiuses especially under 12 ft. and on any curved
work as this helps to stop loco's slowing down due to flange friction as they
run through the curves. Moulded in dark chocolate brown UV stabilized A.B.S.
plastic, this has a longer life expectancy than polypropylene outside. Can
also be used as straight track. Can be solvent welded with A.B.S. chairs
to make multi gauge track. Available in BR 3 bolt or Midland 4 bolt chair
detail. Compatible with other makes of track. Packs of 18 or 180 double sleeper
units, to make 1 yard or 10 yards.
The new Fine scale code 180 rail also fits both 'Standard' and
'Gauge Widened' sleeper units for both the 3 and 4 bolt chair design, but the
rail sits deeper into the 3 bolt chair, but there is still sufficient clearance
to run both wheel sets. |
|
|
STANDARD SCALE FIRE RETARDANT
SLEEPER UNITS |

These are the same as the 'Gauge Widened' sleeper units,
but have the addition of a fire retardant in the plastic, making them ideal for
steaming bays or exhibition tracks where safety is paramount. The plastic
will still melt but will not catch fire and will self extinguish. Track
gauge 45.5mm. Moulded in 'Charcoal Black' A.B.S. plastic. Packs of 18
or 180 double sleeper units, to make 1 yard or 10 yards. |
|
STANDARD SCALE TURNOUT SLEEPER |
155mm long for point work construction,
11mm wide, in long life chocolate brown UV stabilized ABS. plastic. Can
be solvent welded. This has pre-segmented and numbered cut positions in 5mm
jumps from 90mm to 155mm. The spacer bars have a unique hidden inter locking
end that makes an extremely robust & stable turnout. 24 required for
standard 3 meter course scale turnout. Packs of 10 or 100.
Can also be used for non-standard track gauges, such as 'Scaleten'.
|
|
STANDARD
SCALE/FINESCALE CHAIRS |
A set of
Chairs, all CAD designed by 'Len Newman' of 'Exactoscale'. Designed for
the code 200 rail, but can also be used with the new code 180 rail. These
include - Running Chair to standard B.R. "S1" (3 bolt) design, Slide
Chair to standard B.R. "PJ" (4 bolt) design with a separate bolt head
and a separate support block as in the prototype. The V grease groove is
also modelled. A Check Chair to standard B.R. "CC" (4 bolt) design,
this has a flange way width of 2.8mm to give better checking through turnouts.
Also a Bridge Chair to standard B.R. "L1" (4 bolt) design. They
are finely modelled to give a great appearance in dark brown UV stabilized A.B.S.
plastic. Solvent weld to the turnout sleeper or double A.B.S. sleeper units
for multi gauge track, or weld in the separate pin to press into pre-drilled 3
mm diameter holes. These can also be used for modeller's who prefer wooden
sleepers; the locating spigot has a cruciform ribbed design. These pins have a rim diameter of 4.9mm, spigot
overall diameter of 3mm including the 4 x .1mm anti-turn vertical ribs, rim thickness
of .6mm and an overall height of 5mm. 3 bolt chairs in packs of 100
or 1000, including pins. Slide, Check or Bridge Chair in packs of 10 or
100. Tophat pins in packs of 10, 100 or 1000. |
|
TURNOUT
KITS |

unit, they will also fit the Finescale sleeper unit. Can be solvent welded to
the gauge widened A.B.S. sleeper units. Packs of 100 (sufficient for approximately
10 yards of track).
Also available in Fire Retardant A.B.S. Plastic
|
|
FISHPLATES |
Complete
set of injection moulded rail joiners (fishplates) are now available. I
have developed a low cost injection moulded fishplates with a scale length of
15mm long and only fits my code 180 rail, and also a course scale universal version
for 'Standard' or 'Fine' track, which is 20mm long and fits either code 180 or
the older code 200 rail. These have bolt head detail on one side with bolt
and nut detail on the other side. Designed to be sprung onto the rails to
hold the rails in line all the time. These have no central insulation bar,
but this could easily be fitted with a tiny piece of plastic inserted. Supplied
in packs of 10's & 100's. Supplied with a Super Elevation Wedge to hold them
open whilst fitting. These are available in different materials depending on your
application and preference:-
A.S.A. |

TRACK FIXING PINS |
Modeller's note -
a pack of 100 is sufficient for approximately 10 yards of track. |
Track
fixing escutcheon pins. With a domed head. They are made in steel which gives
the strength required for fixing and they are also plated in brass and lacquered
to give long life protection outdoors.
The discrete fixing on the 'Fine' or 'Standard' sleeper unit
is 1.5mm high, so this should be deducted from the pin length to give the fixing
depth. The shorter 10mm are ideal for the 'Fine' track, but the longer 13mm can
be used but are tighter in the hole, you may need to use a 1.2mm drill to open
out on the ABS version.
SPECIFICATION;
19 gauge x 10mm long in brass plated steel. Pack of 100 or 1000

A.B.S. WELD |
This
is a special weld glue used to join A.B.S. plastic parts together.
Available in 2 forms, a thin version which will flash straight
away and is ideal to flash under 2 plastic surfaces such as the super elevation
wedges, and slightly thickened version which tends to hold itself as droplets
and when the another plastic is brought into contact, will flash across, so this
version is ideal for turnout making.
Contains:- Methyl Ethyl Ketone. 50 ml. contents in both
and will make at least 20 turnouts.
Flammable/Irritant.
A safety pot stand is also available to help prevent inadvertent
spillage. |

RAIL RUSTER & DESCALER |
I have a rail rusting liquid for
the stainless steel. This is a commercial strength acid descalant with a
specially developed inhibitor to protect the steel, it is simply brushed on and
over night will turn stainless steel rails a nice rusty colour. This can
also be used to rapidly descale boilers; it can be used cold and only requires
a short contact time. Packed in 125ml. I am not able to ship abroad. |
